It had been a while since I had been in North America, so this was an opportunity to be a stranger in a somewhat familiar land, even if it was Texas. I hit the ground running when I arrived, as my suitcase was not on the plane from New York. There was no room for all the bags, so mine was one that was left behind. They delivered it the next day in the nick of time for us to go out to see Willie Nelson.

Fridays are pork chop Fridays at the restaurant in the building where my daughter works, so that was my first lunch there. Oh my god! The pork chops were huge, five fingers high. Kind of disgusting, but I did my best. It’s funny, when I am outside of Turkey pork is very attractive, but although I can get it in Istanbul, I don’t bother searching it out. At any rate, we had a nice lunch and brought home a doggy bag– for us, not the doggy!

willie!

I took a long nap and then got ready for a long evening. Some of Meadow’s and Alvah’s friends met at her place and then we all went to Fort Worth to a gourmet Mexican restaurant. The food was pretty good and the margaritas were fine. We then found our way to Billy Bob’s, where Willie Nelson had already started. We had really good seats, but unfortunately Meadow and Alvah had to stand somewhere else, as there was a ticket mix up. I really enjoyed seeing Willie and like many other people there was singing along sotto voce. Every once in a while he would whip off his bandanna and throw it into the audience– he had a steady supply of them. He did not natter much, just went on from song to song. There was a young guy playing guitar, looked a little nerdy, but he got up and sang a few songs and sounded just like Willie Someone said it was his son and someone else said it was the guy who played Willie in a film. At any rate, he had the voice. The piano player was interesting– she was a sharp faced plump older woman, probably in her late 60s. She wore tails and a top hat and mostly concentrated on her playing, looking up at Willie from time to time. Although I saw her leg pumping to the music, otherwise she was not very animated. The bass player was the same, sitting back on the side, playing away. There was also a young percussionist with a small battery of drums as well as a harmonica player. Altogether they were great. I felt a little bit like we were in a bar somewhere but without a dance floor. Billy Bob’s is huge. Luke commented that it was like a country western music supermarket. Right in the middle was one bar where people were smoking cigarettes, amazingly enough. There were bands playing in various places and there was a dance floor. As we went into the place we passed some horses in a corral– they were part of the rodeo that is included in Billy Bob’s. Everywhere there were a lot of cowboy hats and cowboy boots.

The next day, once everyone was up, we had a good breakfast and then Meadow and I set off for Cookville, Texas, which is up by Texarkana. Texas is really flat in this part and we saw a lot of cattle and horses. I had several opportunities to wish on a white horse (and no telling what the wishes were for!). When we were getting close, Meadow was trying to sort out exactly where to get off the freeway and let her foot get a little heavy so we were speeding. She was talking to Joseph for final directions and had to go saying ‘We’re being pulled over by the police.’ The police officer was very nice, with a real Texas drawl, and when Meadow explained that she was trying to get to Cookville to see her mother’s old friend, he just gave her a warning and wished us a good day. Joseph lives on 6 forested acres. I had not been in a place like that for a long time– such a contrast from living near the Galata Tower and 4 or 5 story apartment buildings to being in a cabin amongst tall trees. There was also a pond that was recovering from last year’s drought. I had not seen Joseph in 40 years, though he remembered it as more. He kept asking me if I remembered an event or a person and often I did not. That was a long ago chapter. Joseph lives out there on his own so I think he was lonely and basically talked our ears off. We took a stroll around his property and then he took us to his jewellery workshop where he proceeded to make each of us one of his tree of life pieces. Mine is a necklace, which has already generated quite a few compliments. We were a little antsy to go, but settled in to the inevitable and when he finished got ready to leave. In the car, Meadow commented that it was the first time in ages that she had done something out of the ordinary, so i was glad she enjoyed it too.

this is really texas!

When we got back into Dallas, we met up at the house and then went for pizza. It was a place where you brought your own wine or whatever. They opened it and brought glasses, charging a corking fee. The pizza was great and the conversation was good, though by that time I was fading.

That afternoon Meadow hosted a pot luck, so we prepared for that. I whipped out a couple of apple pies, Luke did jerked chicken, and Alvah roasted a pork loin stuffed with wild rice. I was surprised at how many people brought food that they had made from boxes (brownies or fruit jello) or just brought ready food (vegies with dip). I had also brought some Turkish cheese– sharp white cheese with pistachios and herbed white cheese, as well as pistachio helva and cheese helva that my yogurt man brings. Meadow used the various Turkish table cloths I have given her over the years, which pleased me. I really liked all these young people. They were professionals (lawyers, engineers, consultants) and very congenial. Some were from Dallas or other parts of Texas and some were from other states.

Dallas seems to be a nice city. However, I am staying in my daughter’s very nice big home, nicely furnished and decorated. She has matching plates and dishes! So different from the home she grew up in. Dallas is quite flat and there is not much water in the form of rivers. However, there is Turtle Creek, which has been developed as a park. It doesn’t seem to be a very international place, though I did see some Asians and even an Arab family. Meadow works on the 17th floor of one of the many tall buildings in down town, so she took us for the tour and we could see many other buildings from up high. She also showed us where the city has covered over a highway and is building a park. Across from there is the sculpture museum where Jospeh and I went the day he came into town. Imagine being so rich that you could afford to buy a Picasso, a Rodin, a Roy Lichtenstein, or whatever! And very nice of the Nasher family to share with all of us.

I had a couple of days of sitting around and I enjoyed them. I put my feet up and caught up on some TV. I got pretty sick of the Republican campaign– what a lot of idiots– and was distressed at the anti immigrant ads. I was also a little surprised to see a lot of ads selling medication; these ads then went on to list the side effects, which seemed a little horrendous. Selling to the baby boomers. Television really shows what is going on the culture, since it also affects it greatly.

I don’t drive anymore, as my license expired a few years ago and I don’t need a car in Istanbul. In North America it makes me more reliant on people to drive me, but when I am in a car I can look around more. I certainly enjoyed being driven around in my daughter’s Mercedes or her boyfriend’s Jeep!

It seemed like I went all over Dallas. There were some lovely old mansions not too far from where my daughter lives. In fact, she lives in an area that is full of apartment buildings that are very nice. Occasionally you can see small houses that have been built or converted to duplexes. Most of the buildings could be anywhere but sometimes you can see homes or buildings that have a particularly Texas style, sort of a southwestern style, squarish, beige. My daughter told me before I came that in Dallas people shop and go out to eat. I did a little shopping to take care of my list, but I certainly went out to eat a lot. And drink. Of course I have had a couple margaritas and at one place I had a ‘Manny’s taxi’, which was like a margarita mixed with sangria. I had a duck fart, which was layers of baileys and other things and an alligator something and all kinds of beer– Blue Moon and Belgian White, both very light beers that come with a slice of orange. One place we went to had hundreds of beers ranging from $3 to to $23.

One of Meadow’s friends, Lisa, is an artist. We visited her one day and she explained how she makes bags out of old banners and billboard ads. Those would normally be thrown away, but she takes them and makes shopping bags, courier bags, or purses out of them. She very kindly gave me one, which was great on the plane home. If you are interested in these, you can look at bannertheory.com

The balls have little computer chips in them so they can be tracked. The field has large wide holes in it marked with grids and a coloured flag. From your area on a computer screen you can choose the kind of game you want to play. You put your balls into a box and have to put the ball in play through a hole that notes the ball. When you play it you aim for one of the gridded holes. If the ball goes into one of these wide holes, you get points. We watched as a little Jeep with rolling scoopers collected balls. The Jeep became a target for those who were not serious about their games. A waitress brought drinks (beer and then duck farts) and we had a good ol’ time. I had never hit a golf ball before, so I had my chance and gave it a whirl. I even made some points!

After that we went to Manny’s for dinner. Manny’s is a tex mex restaurant in an old house. We were a large group, as usual, so we were put at a big table in our own room. There we drank Manny’s taxis and Luke downed a 4 shot tequila. They brought us chips and salsa, which was very good. Unlike turkey, chips are generally unflavoured, so I was very happy eating tortilla chips there. I had brisket tacos, which were very soft beef inside tacos. They came with the standard spanish rice and refried beans and of course guacamole. Yummy.

One day we went to brunch at Toulouse. This restaurant had a sort of European décor. After we had ordered coffee or juice, the waiter brought us hot beignets along with a coffee orange sauce. Wonderful! I ordered a salade nicoise that had seared fresh tuna (i.e. barely cooked on the outside and raw inside). The salad was not mixed, so the various components were arranged on the plate. Along with the tuna was a sort of french dressing sauce, hard-boiled eggs, a couple of pieces of cooked potato, some anchovies (pass), some lettuce, olives, and some olive paste. Along with some delicious sliced baguette, it was really good.

This was one of the few neighbourhoods where you can walk around for a few blocks. I saw more people on the street there than I saw anywhere. Right beside Toulouse is a former train track converted to a paved way where people run, walk their dogs, or just stroll. Where I was standing there were some metal posts with blue lights in them that produced sounds and sort of music. It was very cool. Then we strolled down and looked in windows of Crate and Barrel and other shops. We were headed for the Apple Store. I had never been in an Apple Store. It was very full of people looking at the various gadgets laid out on tables for people to try out. There were a few kids playing games on them. Meadow was buying a new iphone so she could give me her old one. I looked around the store and saw all ages, shapes, colours, and cultures of people getting their technology fix. As a techno klutz I was quite amazed, particularly at the kids, to whom it was old hat.

Another place we went was Urbano, which was a small restaurant in a Latino neighbourhood. This also was a byob place. It was full when we got there, so we stood around and drank wine. I wanted to go across the street to buy some cigarettes and one of Meadow’s friends insisted on going with me for safety. I hadn’t seem anything around there to make me afraid and I was sorry that this person had such a stereotype of the neighbourhood. That night really reminded me of Turkey, as it got kind of raucous. It turned out that two of the other three tables were also for birthday dinners. One was all girls and we did not interact much with them, but the other birthday person was a middle aged woman. Our birthday guy got her up to dance with him and even picked her up. She was a substantial size and I am sure she enjoyed being treated like a sweet young thing. We all sang happy birthday to everyone and it was really fun. The people in my group commented that they had never had that kind of experience before, so I am sure that in some psychic (or psycho) way I brought it from Turkey, where strangers are more likely to celebrate together.

We went to one of the few places in Dallas that sell yarn. It was in a converted house in a neighbourhood that is being encroached upon by yet more apartment buildings. The yarn in that shop, the Sheep Cottage. were wonderful– colourful, soft, high quality. I bought some silk yarn (40% off thank goodness, as it was $20/skein) and a couple of skeins of cotton thread. We were talking in another room and I saw a box of different shaded skeins of fine cotton thread, which is actually what I was after, but it was $40 so I skipped it. The woman we were talking to told us she had lived in the Middle East in the 50s– in Baghdad and Mosul. How things have changed.

Our major mission was to buy me a comfortable pair of shoes for wearing in the café. We went first to Nordstrom Rack, which is usually a good place for me to find shoes, but not this time. However, we did some clothes and I finally settled on a loose top (a secondary mission) and laughed when I saw it was made in Turkey. I didn’t think the prices were that reasonable and I certainly paid more than I would have in Turkey, but I wanted it. So on to the next. We drove over the freeway to the Park Rose shopping mall, which is one of Dallas’ original malls, built in the 60s out in the then boonies. We didn’t go anywhere except for Dillard’s. |There I found my new shoes– Dansko clogs, flashy leopard print, on sale for $99. And on the way to the cash register, a pair of slipon crocs. Mission accomplished.

Of course one day we had to go to where Kennedy was killed. We did not go the museum because Meadow had been there a million times and that was ok with me. We did see the X on the road. Then we went to Wild Bill’s for some tourist shopping.

Back home to catch our breath and then out to Deep Ellum. This is an area of Dallas that unlike the other places is pretty down home. You can see the high buildings of down town, but Deep Ellum still had a gritty feel, even as it was coming back up. We went to a couple of art openings so we were able to walk around the neighbourhood. It used to be rather dangerous and at the same time the place to go for great blues. Now it is bohemian, full of restaurants, bars, and galleries. However, I saw a sign that asked people to save Deep Ellum and while talking to some people outside one gallery, I asked about it. Apparently someone had bought up most of the property in Deep Ellum and will probably destroy the neighbourhood, which would be a pity. After we had visited the galleries we headed for a well known pizza place, only to find there was a 2 hour wait. Not only that, they are usually booked up 2 or 3 days in advance. Amazing!! So we decided to go to the All Good Café, which we had passed on our walk. It was a good choice, as it had a funky décor and there was a great blues/rock and roll band on stage. The food was good– I had a blt– and the atmosphere was fun.

From there we headed to a bar down town. as we waited in line for valet parking (EVERWHERE has valet parking), Meadow went to check out the line. There was a 20 minute wait but girls could get in free. Meadow pointed out that we were 3 girls and one guy but the bouncer said that the guy would have to wait. So we blew it off and went to another place, the Gingerbread Man. There we sat upstairs in this former house and drank good beer from their menu of at least a hundred international and local beers. It was much more relaxing, as it was not a meet market.

The last full day I was in Dallas Meadow and I went out to a late breakfast. I had to have huevos rancheros, of course. then we walked around the neighbourhood a bit. Several of the trees had been covered in knitting. They were very colourful and it was a very cool idea– subversive knitting street art!

A word about valet parking in Dallas: almost everywhere we went there was valet parking. You paid someone $2 or $5 to park your car, even if it was right in front of the place. I was rather surprised at this, but Meadow pointed out that in the summer when it is really hot, it is nice to be able to dash into air conditioning and let someone else deal with the parking.

I was also struck by the many gadgets that people used. Many people have a gps in their car or on their iphone. Navigating is done that way, so different from Istanbul, where we navigate by landmarks. Most new cars have a gps system, but I didn’t think they were always totally reliable and I would find it annoying to have some voice constantly giving me directions. When we were on the road to Cookville I could also see how I could be just about anywhere in the U.S. as we passed Chilis, Burger King, and various other chain stores and restaurants. It makes a homogeny that blends the country together, which is good and not so good I suppose. Of course the people I was around mostly had iphones. One morning some of Meadow’s girlfriends were sitting around and each was communing with her iphone. Sometimes Luke used his to watch movies before bed. My phone did not work there, so I had to rely on others’ phone or just do without, the latter of which was actually ok. When Meadow passed her old iphone to me, Alvah added some stuff to it, but it disappeared when I had it unlocked here. Now I am learning to use a new gadget.

It was lovely to see my beautiful grown-up daughter and my handsome grown-up son as they interacted with each other, with me, and with the many friends who came through. It also gave me a perspective on my café. I can see why visitors to Istanbul are relieved to come into it for some familiarity and someone who understands where they come from. I appreciate more the international aspect of the café. It was helpful to explain my café to people in Dallas, but I suspect most of them have not travelled outside of the country, let alone the continent. There was a Brazilian girl at the pot luck and I think she was happy to talk to someone who understands what it is like to be an expat. When I do return to North America, that is one of the things I will have to deal with, as I look like them but I am not like them anymore. This is definitely on my mind, as in a year or two I will move to Canada. I don’t say ‘back to Canada’ because it has changed in the many years since I left it. I consider it the next adventure. This trip was a good way to dip my toes in the water. Of course I would not have the life that I experienced in Dallas, but I can see that I could be a stranger in a familiar land once again.

A while ago a friend was commenting on prices somewhere else, saying she could have gone to a market and bought the same thing for three lira instead of eight. I pointed out to her that pricing in a place like mine included a whole lot more than the price of the item itself. For example, a customer comes in and orders a meal and stays for an hour. This is what the person pays for in addition to the meal itself. Unlike your mom, you pay me for preparing your food. I do the shopping, I do most of the cooking, I often also do the serving and the picking up and washing of the dishes. I pay the rent so you can sit in my comfortable café for as long as you want. I pay the electric, water, and gas. I am the one who stresses about the various bureaucracies (the Byzantine bureaucracy was invented here, you know!). I pay the taxes (yes, I do!)– and unlike where I come from, instead of rent being a tax deduction, here you have to pay 20% tax on the rent. Ach. I have bought the appliances and the furniture, not to mention the decorations. I even feed the kitties that so entertain the customers. So is it worth 8 lira instead of 3? Of course it is! And perhaps more.

When I first came to Turkey in 1998, inflation was running at about 80%. Prices seemed to go up daily. Inflation is way down now, but prices are still going up, though more slowly. Since I buy in quantities for the café, I can really see how they are increasing. I recently bought filter coffee and was shocked to see that it had gone up yet again. I made me curious to see how other prices had gone up in the past year.

Here are some examples:

coffee almost 25%

eggs 50%

milk almost 70%

cheese 20%

flour 15%

walnuts 30%

cocoa 110%

green peppers 100%

canned tuna 30%

beer 20%

I shop carefully, but even so, local and world events make prices go up. For example, cocoa is very expensive now because of the problems in Ivory Coast. Green peppers are expensive because they no longer come from Syria in the winter. Milk products are generally a little more expensive in the winter, but still they are more expensive than last winter. Some things have higher taxes. And of course now there is an economic crisis and the dollar to the lira is very high.

I shop very carefully and over these past few years I have learned where to get the best prices at my own convenience. I shop every few weeks at Tahtakale for coffee, teas, herbs, cheeses and other things. I order several things from a company that delivers (so much better than hauling things myself!). Some people who have tried to sell things to me are shocked when I tell them that I can find the same thing cheaper at Dia, the local supermarket. Hey, bub, I know the prices! I buy produce from the local seller, which is not always cheaper, but I don’t have time to go to the Sunday market and those savings are wiped out by the taxi ride back anyway.

However, I think when people eat at Molly’s Café, they still get their money’s worth. They get a full plate of home cooked food and don’t leave hungry! I try to keep the prices as low as I can, but little by little they too are creeping up. Let’s hope the world calms down soon!

In the meantime, the café will be open under the able stewardship of my valued helper, Belgin. While I am gone there will be limited hours and a slightly limited menu, but other than that, it will be the warm friendly place that it always is.

I wish you all a very good 2012. I wish everyone peace, happiness, and prosperity.

There is a lot of press these days about violence against women in Turkey. Of course this issue is not restricted to this country– it is a big issue in ‘civilized’ countries such as the U.S. and countries in Europe. I think the big difference is that talking about it here is new. There was a horrific photo in the media a few months ago of an attractive woman who had been brutally beaten up by her boyfriend, who left her on the bench of a bus stop and then called the police. He was later arrested and she has since died. (see http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/woman-beaten-by-boyfriend-dies-after-45-days-in-hospital.aspx?pageID=438&n=woman-beaten-by-boyfriend-dies-after-45-days-in-hospital-2011-09-01) I hope he is thrown in jail for life, but I doubt it will happen. More recently a video from a security camera showed a handcuffed woman being beaten in a police station. (See http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/video-of-police-beating-woman-raises-reactions) The officers may receive up to 1.5 years in jail, but she has been accused of hitting and swearing at them, so she could receive up to 6.5 years! Something is wrong.

Some religious people say a man can beat his wife according to the Koran or the Bible or whatever, but of course there are many interpretations of this. Mostly it is a crime and in Turkey women in particular are working on making it much more of a crime.

Many years ago in the U.S. I came across a short guy trying to hit a girl. I am tallish and I was wearing cowboy boots, so I yelled at him, grabbed her, and we locked ourselves in a nearby phone booth. He yelled and threatened me, but finally he went away and we got out of the phone booth.

Last night I was reminded of this because I was awakened at 12:30 am by yelling upstairs. The girl was crying and the man was shouting. I heard running and thumping. I could not just ignore it. It would have been impossible to just try to go back to sleep. Finally, I got up, grabbed my keys, and went upstairs. I leaned on their doorbell and banged on their door. I was furious. Two men came to the door, one a young man with a typical Turkish moustache and the other a sort of nerdy guy with glasses and long hair. He jumped in front of the door and said ‘I am here.’ The whole exchange was in English because I have a hard time being angry in Turkish. I told them they if they did not stop that I would call the fucking police. And more, of course. By then the guy who lives across the hall had opened his door. Why had he not tried to do anything to stop it? He must have heard it all even more than I could. So many neighbours try to ignore things like this. And really, it is a dilemma, because these are neighbours in their own private space. However, when there is violence, someone must act. It was a risk because the man could have attacked me– although I am sure that the spectre of a tousled large middle-aged woman was not a vision that would incline someone to attack. I went back to my flat and things calmed down. It was very upsetting to me and I am so sorry for the girl, who has had less noisy fights in the past.

What would you have done? Grumble, bitch, mutter? Go upstairs and confront?

Last month and this month I have read a variety of books. Here’s my book report, dear high school teachers of long ago. (don’t know why some of the fonts got smaller…)

One book that came into my hands recently was the Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. This is a really thick book– 1500 pages. I have learned that there are three groups of people related to this: those who have never heard of it, those who have read it (a small group), and those who have started it and given up. I am in the last group. I found it really hard to follow and I decided it was too hard work to keep on with it. It’s in the café if you want to be in one of the last two groups.

I also read Married to a Bedouin by Marguerite van Geldermalsen. I have never been to Petra, though it is certainly on my list, and it was interesting to read about it when it was occupied by real people. The book is not scintillating reading and the friend who gave it to me was disappointed that it didn’t get into how they produced their three children, but it was a nice story of intercultural love. It is hard to image how a woman from New Zealand could meet and marry into a Bedouin tribe, as the differences would be immense. However, she did this and loved her husband for the 30 years they were married, until he died.

A customer gave me a copy of Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart. It was a combination of love or infatuation, science fiction, and prophecy. He wrote about all the young people who communicated with each other with their apparats with occasional verballing and constant online shopping for see-through clothes, among other things. The story is set in a time when the U.S. is being taken over financially by the Chinese and then is cut up into pieces by other countries as well, including Norway. Part of the story talks about protesters occupying a park in New York City. Sounds familiar? This book was published last year! The protagonist, Lenny, son of Russian Jewish immigrants, falls in love with Eunice, daughter of Christian Korean immigrants. It is told through Lenny’s diaries and Eunice’s email/blogs. I found it amazing because now the U.S. is in financial trouble and it and Europe on going on bended knees to beg the Chinese for bailouts. The man who gave me the book is a banker, and he commented that sometimes novelists are more predictive of the future than economists. Kind of scary! It is a pretty good story but mostly it was interesting for how it presents a possible future of even more limited relationships.

The same person brought me a copy of The Gaze of the the Gazelle by Arash Hejazi. This book has actually not been published yet and this was an uncorrected proof, so the teacher in me wanted to get out my red pen. However, it was a readable piece about growing up in Iran. Now Hejazi is in exile from his beloved country, which the reader understands, as he is very outspoken about the lies and disappointments that occurred and still occur in that country. The story was set off by the death of a young girl, Neda, who died in his arms after being shot by an undercover Islamist revolutionary guard. His friend shot a video of the death even through his horror and they were able to get it out to YouTube, where it went across the world. It was an interesting read and such a pity that someone who loves his country and his people had to leave it.

Tales from the Expat Harem, edited by Anastasia Ashman and Jennifer Eaton Gokmen has been around for a few years, but I just recently read it. I found the writing to be rather self-conscious and I really dislike the title. I know it is good for marketing, but it just feeds into the misconceptions that many people have of the harem in Turkey. In fact, the tales are nothing like the misconceptions and often are heartfelt stories. I am acquainted with quite a few of the women in the book and was more interested in the stories for that reason. Especially the stories of cross-cultural relationships are important, as no matter where a couple lives, the difficulties of marriage are affected even more by having to deal with different cultures and possibly religions. It is worth reading, but not a great work of art.

Now I am on a popcorn book phase. One I read recently is Robert Goddard’s Caught in the Light. A photographer, Ian Jarrett, meets a mysterious woman in Vienna and falls in love (or obsession). He goes back to England, gets out of an already rocky marriage, and finds this woman has a convoluted personality which also involves identification with a woman from the early 1800s who actually invented photography. Along the way there are some murders, a lot of clues for a wild goose chase, and a sort of open ending. It’s a good story and satisfying because you don’t have to think about it much– good for bedtime reading.

All the Colours of Darkness by Peter Robinson was my next book. It was interesting but not gripping. It involved the murder suicide of a gay couple. It turned out that the man who was murdered was a spy and so MI6 was involved in all their sneaky ways. It was a good story but it didn’t make me hungry to read more by this author.

A book that I started some time ago and then lent out came back to me, so I finally finished it. This was Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson. It was published in 1990, so some of the recent references are a little dated, but as usual Bryson takes a complete and somewhat humourous approach to various issues of language, including swearing and word play. I like reading about language, so I enjoyed it, and I think that teachers of English should also read it to give more background to why English is the way it is.

Finally for now, I read The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak. I had read a couple of other books by her, and this one has quite a different topic and a different format. An American woman is asked to write a report for a publisher about a book and is pulled into the book by its topic and by its writer. Shafak’s book alternates between various characters in the book within the book and Ella. It was an interesting look at the Sufi dervish Shams of Tabriz, who became the companion of Rumi but was killed by jealous people. The whole thing makes Ella look at love in her life as a wife and mother. The friend who gave me the book said she could not get into it, but I really enjoyed the stories in it and highly recommend it.

On Oct. 23, as we were returning from a relaxing weekend at the hotsprings, the ferryboat’s television screens were full of images from a 7.2 earthquake that had occurred in the eastern city of Van. Once again we saw horrifying scenes of buildings that had fallen into rubble with people crushed underneath. I recalled the same scenes from the big earthquake that hit the areas around Istanbul in 1999 and was chilled. Van was less populated, but the suffering was similar– except that this was the fall, not the summer.

For days there were news reports, telethons, and calls for donations. Then there was another 5.2 earthquake, which killed more people who had stayed in buildings that were supposedly safe, including a couple of hotels housing aid workers and journalists. More people died.

At first the Turkish government did not accept offers of help from other countries, but soon it was clear that they could not deal with the disaster themselves. At one point the government was accused of not accepting aid from Israel because of the recent political conflicts, but the government denied this, as at that moment they were not accepting aid from any countries. Finally the government accepted tents and prefab buildings, among other kinds of help. People who had been staying on the streets at least had some shelter. Individuals sent clothing and blankets, but even this turned out to be controversial, as some sent sticks to signal their nationalistic prejudices against the Kurds. Much of the clothing was too old to be usable.

Then it started to snow. This has been the coldest November in years and now the people staying in the summer tents are literally freezing. At least one child has died. Others have suffered from poisoning from the coal or kerosene heaters. Those who have money have started to leave Van for other cities, especially Diyarbakir, where many have relatives. However, one person reported that the rents there had gone up 30%, with landlords taking advantage of the demand.

I watched all this wondering how I could help. I don’t send clothing, as years ago I donated clothing after a hurricane hit Florida and then saw on the news a huge mountain of clothing being bulldozed because the people in charge could not deal with it.

Then an old friend sent me a message. He had worked here in Istanbul for several years as a waiter to save money to buy a home for him and his family. In the earthquake they had lost their home and everything in it and of course he had no work. He asked me for help. I sent him some money and when I messaged him to check that it got there, he wrote back to say that yet another earthquake had happened and he was in the hospital. He wants to get his family out of Van, to Ankara or Gaziantep.

I posted on Facebook that people could come to the café to make donations to this real family. At a dinner the other night, the donation box grew by a total of 10 lira and change. Very few people have donated and I am very disappointed. Even my refugee cleaner donated a little something. I have some ideas for making the donation pot grow, but I am sorry that people have sort of forgotten the people who are still suffering from this disaster.

If I have guilted you into giving, please stop by the café and donate!
