ottoman music at molly’s cafe

on nov 14 agnes agopian and nicolas royer-artuso played an intimate concert at molly’s cafe.  agnes played qanun, which is like a dulcimer, and nicolas played the oud.  it was a  lovely concert, as they played well together.  in the second half agnes also sang.  later she told us that for this kind of music, unlike a western orchestra, even with many instruments, every instrument is playing the same note at the same time.  their music made me think that we should be sitting on cushions dressed in flowing kaftans, smoking long pipes, and eating sweet pastries.  instead people were drinking wine or tea and eating cakes.  in all it was a very mellow evening.
